History
Institute of Home Economics (IHE) was established in 1959 as a specialized institution for quality home science education. Located in Delhi, India, IHE provides an environment for research, teaching and learning to students from all over the world.
IHE started with just 12 faculty members and seven classrooms. Since then, it has grown exponentially in terms of infrastructure, program offerings and student enrolment to become a leading institute in its field. It is now part of Delhi University under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). Currently, there are around 600 staff members who teach 600 students each year on a number of courses related to Home Science such as Food Science & Nutrition, Clothing & Textiles, Family Resource Management etc.
IHE is known for pioneering many new strategies and innovations in fields like agriculture also. One such example is Dairy Technology-where IHE has been providing training programs for the last 20 years which promote dairy farming practices among rural communities, thereby helping them generate income & employment opportunities as well as overcome poverty.
Through its activities and initiatives, IHE has immensely contributed towards empowering disadvantaged communities by introducing them to new technologies and providing them with opportunities for growth. Today IHE is a recognized leader in home science research due to its excellent academic programs, comprehensive research activities and collaboration with national & international organizations like UNESCO.
Best Practices
- Utilize technology to enhance the learning process of students: Make sure that students have access to computers and the internet, as well as other relevant technologies such as multimedia equipment, software, and coding tools.
- Employ teaching staff with specialized knowledge in different fields: The faculty should include experts in each field who are capable of providing high-quality instruction to students. This will ensure that students understand the topics being taught and can apply their knowledge effectively.
- Develop creative methods for learning: Introduce creative ways to encourage student engagement and creativity–such as role-playing scenarios, project-based learning, competitions or workshops –which stimulate the minds of eager young learners and make them more interested in a topic or subject.
- Encourage collaborations between staff, students and parents: Collaboration is an effective way to bridge gaps between students, educators and parents. It can also help foster a sense of community and mutual respect among all involved parties.
- Develop cross-curricular activities: Incorporate subjects from outside of Home Economics into courses so that students get a broader view of the subject and develop skills in other domains which can supplement their educational growth in Home Economics.
- Integrating Project-based Learning Approach: Incorporate project-based learning strategies for better comprehension by applying knowledge learnt in class on real-world situations with praxis-related activities such as creating product prototypes or giving presentations on projects related to Home Economics topics like nutrition or fashion design etcetera
- Focus on lifelong Learning instalment: Instituters should remember that they are not providing education only but guiding youth into lifelong insightful capability where they grow continuously throughout life with constructive feedback enhancing imaginative capabilities through problem-solving micro exercises, group tasks or field surveys resulting in reflective approaches towards practical concerns
