History
Kasturba Hospital, located in Manipal, India, is a healthcare provider that has existed since 1914. In the early days of the hospital, it provided basic medical care to the people in Udupi district and surrounding areas. Over the years, Kasturba Hospital has expanded its scope of services to become one of Karnataka’s most advanced medical facilities.
The hospital was named after Kasturba Gandhi, who served as a nurse and volunteer at hospitals during her time with Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violent movement for India’s independence. In 1955, Kasturba Memorial Trust was set up to expand the hospital’s capabilities and increase access to healthcare by providing free services to needy patients. Today, the trust runs 12 programs across south India in partnership with Manipal University.
Kasturba Hospital is known for its specialized treatment centers such as an oncology center, cardiac center, transplant center and neo-natal care center. It is one of only two Level 2 trauma care centers in Karnataka state and is renowned for its maternal health initiatives which have helped reduce infant mortality rates in nearby villages. Furthermore, Kasturba Hospital works closely with local communities through health education programs and community outreach efforts.
Through partnerships with organizations like Rotary International and USAID (the U.S Agency for International Development), Kasturba Hospital continues working towards improving healthcare access while adhering to the legacy of Kasturba Gandhi’s commitment of service and compassion through quality healthcare delivery worldwide.
