We are dedicated to creating an inclusive atmosphere where our students can bring out their best potential and develop academically, emotionally and professionally. We, therefore, offer various specialized courses such as physical therapy and special education that equip our successful physically handicapped graduates with the knowledge, skills and networks they need in order to attain successful careers in their desired fields. In addition, our custom-designed placement programme assists our students in finding suitable placements suited for their abilities in leading establishments across India. Therefore, it is not just about academics, but also creating an environment of growth for each student by embracing diversity here at Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya Institute of Physically Handicapped University!

Vision And Mission

Vision:

To be a centre of excellence, contributing to an inclusive society without any discrimination on the basis of physical disability.

Mission:

To provide comprehensive rehabilitation services, specialized medical care and vocational training to physically challenged people through a human-centred approach with compassionate service.  We are also committed to doing research and advancing knowledge in order to reduce the socio-economic burden facing people with physical disabilities.

History

The Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya Institute of Physically Handicapped was established in June 1974 as a charitable, non-profit organization in New Delhi. The aim of the institute is to provide basic education and rehabilitation facilities for the physically challenged, through quality services with dignity and respect. This institution provides support and guidance to its stakeholders who are disabled in their physical activities. The institute believes that despite physical disability, everyone has a right to lead an independent life with access to education, occupation and other means of livelihood.

Since its establishment in 1974, this institute has been working for the betterment of people with physical disabilities by providing various resources and programs such as Special Education (SE), Technical Training (TT), Vocational Training (VT), Recreational Resources & Entertainments (RRE) and skill development programmes (SDP). All these resources & programmes help them live independently without any external aid or assistance while carrying out professional, academic and recreational pursuits. The institute also works towards bringing awareness among the public.

Best Practices

  • Respect the dignity and independence of persons with disabilities: Show respect for the person with a disability without patronizing them. Speak directly to the individual and not to caretakers or support workers. Respect their privacy and personal space. Avoid making assumptions about their needs, capabilities, and goals.
  • Provide access: Ensure that any needed accommodations are in place, such as wheelchair ramps, captioning/sign language interpretation, tactile graphics or Braille materials. Be mindful of a physical environment that may be less than accessible because of its layout or design features. Make adjustments on an individual basis as needed.
  • Promote two-way communication: Ask questions to gain insight into the barriers people with disabilities face in relation to the course content or activities you are providing, while understanding that there may be sensitivities around this topic that need to be respected and acknowledged accordingly. Encourage open dialogue by allowing ample opportunity for meaningful participation in conversations related to their work and interests.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of potential biases: Develop an awareness of any potential biases that your colleagues or students may have when working with people with physical disabilities through study sessions focusing on issues like ableism or establishing serious dialogue about ways individuals can become more mindful of unconscious biases they might have towards fully able-bodied individuals versus those who have disabilities
  • Pt Deendayal Upadhyaya Institute should create task forces to review best practices for promoting inclusion at all levels of programming from research workshops and student engagement activities, to faculty hiring processes—with efforts toward documenting overall objectives, strategies, accomplishments and changes taken place over time, as well as how specific actions will help promote institutionalization of these values within organizational culture in general beliefs throughout the institution
