Delhi University students need help getting admitted to the DU hostel. According to various student sites, getting DU hostels is more challenging than DU admissions. The two rounds of DU admissions have been recently completed. The first list of DU hostels has also been released with it. More than half of the DU students are from outside Delhi. And there is a need for more seats in DU hostels. With this condition, students are left with only the option of PGs and rental rooms.
The University of Delhi has 91 affiliated colleges across Delhi and only some colleges have hostels. There are only 4400 seats in the 20 college hostels of Delhi University. Hence, outside students often face issues such as limited seats and capacity in the hostels. Students must also note that admission to a particular DU college doesn’t guarantee hostel accommodation. The allotment of DU hostels is based on the availability of the seats and his/her merit. Even less than half of the first-year students apply for these seats. Moreover, not even 10% of these students get a hostel.
The University includes 20 DU hostels of which 18 belong to the college and 2 at the university level. One of these 2 DU Hostels is dedicated to the PG and research students. The data shows that only 18 colleges for UG students in North Campus have DU hostels. Although, the undergraduate programmes run in 68 DU colleges. The in-campus colleges of Delhi University have hostels like Lady Shri Ram College, which also face problems. This year, LSR College will not be able to provide their 250 DU hostel seats due to renovation work.
Some DU hostels by college have accommodation for both boys and girls. Co-ed DU colleges such as DDU College, Hindu College, Ramjas, SRCC, Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies, and St. Stephens have hostels for both. However, there is a great demand for girl’s DU hostels due to rising security concerns. DU colleges like Hansraj College and Kirori Mal College have only boy’s DU hostels. Women colleges in DU namely Indraprastha College for Women, Miranda House, Daulat Ram College, and Janki Devi Memorial College also provide DU hostel seats for girls.
DU hostels are also available for students on the CUET merit base like courses and colleges. The DU hostels in Mukherjee Nagar have dormitories for around 660 undergraduate students. DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh also stated that there will be a shortage of hostels according to the no. of students. However, the University is in the process of building new hostels for the students’ convenience. A fund of Rs. 161 crore will be allocated to construct a girl’s hostel in the Dhaka area of Mukherjee Nagar. The construction of the hostel will commence within 6 months. The girl’s DU hostel will have a capacity of accommodating 1100 students. The centre has also processed a budget of Rs. 272 crore to construct the girl’s DU hostel. The same locality has been selected to build the hostel. The construction work is expected to start in two years.
