Delhi University (DU) will soon be launching two separate portals for undergraduate and postgraduate admissions. The move has been hailed by the academic community as a step in the right direction towards streamlining the complex admission process for both categories of students.

The two separate portals will reduce the burden on the university’s servers, making it easier and faster for students to navigate the application process. The undergraduate and postgraduate portal is expected to cater to over larger applicants this year.

The decision comes after much deliberation, with the university acknowledging that there has been a constant pressure on the existing admission portal to cope with the rising number of applications every year. With nearly 14 lakh applications, DU is one of the most sought-after universities in India, attracting students from all over the country and even from abroad.

The new portals are expected to improve the quality of the admission process, with features such as professional dashboards, better student tracking and management of the application process. This will make the entire process smoother and more efficient, allowing students to focus on their studies without worrying about the cumbersome admission process.

According to officials, the separate admission portals will also allow for better integration with other student services like class schedules. This will further reduce the administrative burden on the university, improving the overall efficiency of the institution and enhancing the student experience.

The introduction of these portals is particularly important in light of the ongoing pandemic situation. As the world grapples with the effects of COVID-19, universities across the globe are rethinking their admission processes. DU’s move to introduce separate portals for UG and PG admissions will help facilitate social distancing norms and remove the need for large crowds at the admission counters.

While welcoming the decision, academicians have also raised concerns about the potential fee hike for these admissions. Previously, DU had taken steps to control the rising fees to make education more accessible to students from all strata of society. However, these separate portals may require additional infrastructure and resources that could result in higher fees.

Officials have stated that the fee structure for this year’s admissions will remain unchanged. However, there are reports that DU is considering introducing a differential fee structure based on parental income. This could be a revolutionary step in ensuring that education remains accessible to all segments of society, particularly those from economically weaker sections.

The introduction of separate admission portals also offers an opportunity for DU to reduce the time taken to process applications. In previous years, students have had to wait weeks for their application status to be updated due to the backlog of applications. With these new portals, the admission process is expected to be completed much faster, allowing students to start their courses on time.

This step by DU also aligns with the New Education Policy (NEP) announced last year by the Government of India. The NEP emphasises flexibility, innovation, and multiple pathways for students to pursue their academic objectives. The introduction of separate admission portals for UG and PG admissions at DU is a move in line with this policy and aims to provide a seamless education experience for students.

In conclusion, the introduction of separate portals for undergraduate and postgraduate admissions at Delhi University is a significant development that will improve the quality and efficiency of the admission process for thousands of applicants. This move brings the institution in line with modern trends in higher education while also providing a safer and easier admission process amidst the ongoing pandemic. It is a step forward towards democratising higher education and ensuring that it remains accessible to all segments of society.
