The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a centralised national-level entrance exam. CLAT 2024-25 is conducted for admission to 24  National Law Universities (NLU), except NLU Delhi and NLU Meghalaya. CLAT was originally launched in 2008 as a centralised entrance examination for admission to the National Law Schools and Universities of India.

This exam was conducted by NLUs and followed a method similar to that of the CAT. Every year, each NLU would be allowed to administer this exam. Eventually, a permanent body was established to administer the exam. This entity is known as the Consortium of NLUs. Its headquarters are in Bangalore. The exam is held in December every year.

The test is administered following the Higher Secondary Examination or the 12th grade for admission to integrated undergraduate degrees in law. These are also conducted after graduation for Master of Laws (LL.M.) programmes. It is regarded as one of the top ten most difficult admission exams in India, with an acceptance rate as low as 3%.

Because CLAT is not administered in vernacular languages, English becomes an important aspect of the admissions exam. State board students and those who study regional languages continue to be at a disadvantage.

They must go above and beyond to improve their English language. The test is open only to Indian nationals and NRIs.  Foreign nationals seeking admission to any course at participating universities should contact the university directly. These universities offer designated seats for foreign nationals.
