History of Gargi College
Gargi College, affiliated with the University of Delhi, was established on March 28, 1967. In the 1920s, several individuals with a nationalist outlook initiated a movement aimed at providing higher education for Indian women in Delhi, even before India gained independence. This initiative culminated in the establishment of Daulat Ram College in 1959.
In 1967, the merger of Daulat Ram College with Gargi College took place, a name honouring the esteemed sage Gargi Vachaknavi. Initially, the college exclusively offered degree programs in Arts (BA and B.Sc), along with Home Science as an elective subject and a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work (PGDSW).
The vision and efforts of Dr. Sarup Rani Vasudeva, the Founding Principal, along with her team, played a pivotal role in realising Gargi College‘s mission of delivering higher education to female students in south Delhi. Under Dr. Vasudeva’s guidance, the college experienced rapid growth between 1968 and 1978.
During this period, postgraduate-level courses were introduced across various disciplines, academic resources were significantly enhanced, and diverse research endeavours saw substantial development.
