The Dyal Singh College Library is the largest library in DU. It has been an integral part of the college since its inception in 1959 when it became a constituent college of the University of Delhi.

This library holds a prestigious position among the libraries in the University of Delhi, standing out as the largest library in DU in terms of its user base and collection size. With a vast collection of approximately 102,530 books and 47 journals/magazines, the college library caters to the academic needs of both students and faculty members.

The college library prides itself on its ability to provide extensive resources to its users. By becoming a member of the National Library and Information Service Infrastructure for scholarly content (N-List) program of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD)/University Grants Commission (UGC), the library now offers access to over 6,000 e-journals and more than 164,300 e-books.

This digital collection greatly enhances the research capabilities of the college’s academic community.

Furthermore, this largest library in DU is connected to the Delhi University Network System, allowing users access to the e-resources of the Delhi University Library System and the UGC-INFONET consortium.

 Through this network, students and faculty members can tap into a wealth of online information, expanding their knowledge and research capabilities.

Inclusivity is a key focus of Dyal Singh College’s largest Library in DU. To meet the needs of visually challenged individuals, the library is equipped with assistive technologies such as the JAWS software, a scanner, and a Braille printer.

These IT-based services enable visually impaired students and faculty members to access and utilize library resources effectively, fostering a more inclusive learning environment.

The largest library in DU has embraced modern technology to enhance its services and user experience. It is computerized using Integrated Library Management Software, streamlining library operations and making it easier for users to locate and borrow materials.

Additionally, the library is Wi-Fi enabled, providing seamless internet access to students and faculty members within its premises.

The library building in Block D of the college campus is divided into two floors, each serving different purposes. Here is a breakdown of the sections and facilities on each floor:

1st Floor of the library 

  • Users entry gate: This is the entrance point for library users, where they enter the library building.
  • Property Counter: A counter where users can deposit their personal belongings for safekeeping while they are inside the library.
  • Checking Counter: A counter where library staff check the items being brought into or taken out of the library to ensure compliance with library policies.
  • Students Reading Section: A designated area where students can sit and read books or study in a quiet environment.
  • Faculty Reading Section: Similar to the students reading section, but specifically designated for faculty members.
  • Reference and Textbooks Section: A section of the library that houses reference materials such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, and textbooks that students and faculty can use for research purposes.
  • Periodicals/Magazines and Newspapers Sections: An area where current periodicals, magazines, and newspapers are available for reading.
  • Section for Visually Impaired Students: A specialized section equipped with resources and facilities to support visually impaired students in accessing and utilizing library materials.
  • Librarian Room: The workspace of the librarian, where they manage library operations and assist library users.
  • Library Office: The administrative office of the library, where various library-related tasks, such as cataloging, book acquisition, and management, are handled.

  • Library Stacks: The primary storage area for the library’s collection of books. This floor consists of rows of bookshelves or stacks where books are organized and stored.
  • Circulation Counter: A counter where library users can check out and return books, inquire about library services, and receive assistance from library staff.

These two floors collectively provide library users with a range of resources and services, catering to their informational and educational needs.

About the Committee of Largest Library in DU

The Committee of this largest library in DU serves as a statutory body within the library, with the Convener being elected by the Staff Council for a one-year term. 

The Librarian holds an ex-officio position as a member of the Library Committee. Additionally, each department designates a Teacher-in-charge or a nominee to represent them on the committee.

The Committee of this largest library in DU is responsible for various important functions, including the formulation of book purchase policies, the allocation of funds to different departments, and providing recommendations for books, reading materials, and other resources. 

Furthermore, the committee plays a crucial role in making significant recommendations for the enhancement of library services.

The Circulation Policy of Dyal Singh College Library

Textbooks are provided to meritorious and financially disadvantaged students for the entire academic session. Special arrangements are made for students during examination days, allowing them to borrow additional books until the examination period ends. 

Readers are allowed to borrow books for a duration of 14 days, with the option to renew if needed. The library also offers a Short Message Service (SMS) to send alerts for book issuance, return, and renewal.

 The library assistants offer full assistance to physically challenged individuals in the college library, helping them locate the books they require.

How students can Access Dyal Singh College Library 

The Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) serves as a digital representation of the learning resources available in the library. Our library offers a convenient Web OPAC service using the Koha Library software, which is accessible 24/7 to both faculty and students of the institute. 

To facilitate easy access, all students are registered on the software by scanning the barcode on their smart cards. Each student is issued a Smart ID card containing a barcode, which allows them to borrow and return books online. All the relevant records are maintained in the computer system.
