UPSC Civil Services Exam Pattern

The UPSC CSE is conducted in three phases all over India. Candidates who do not advance through each round are eliminated. There are three phases:

UPSC Prelims

Prelims or Preliminary examination is the level 1 exam conducted to screen out the applicants who are either not very serious about the examination or are just giving the exam for the namesake. This stage consists of two different exams having a total weightage of 200 marks each.

The point to be noted is that the marks scored in this exam are not considered anywhere while finalising the rank for the UPSC exam. It is just used for screening the applicants.

ExamTotal MarksNo. of questionsDuration (Hrs)
GS Paper 12001002
CSAT200802

You must receive a minimum score of 33% on the CSAT examination to qualify. Your GS Paper I won’t be graded until after that. As a result, out of 200 (from the GS Paper I prelims), 200 will be the merit ranking for mains eligibility.

UPSC Mains

The UPSC Mains Exam consists of nine papers, each focusing on different aspects of governance, administration, and general awareness. Let’s explore the nine papers of the UPSC Mains Exam in a concise format:

UPSC Mains Exam - Prepare for the UPSC
UPSC Mains Exam
  • Paper 1: Essay (250 marks) – This paper assesses the candidate’s ability to articulate their thoughts coherently and express their ideas effectively on various topics.
  • Paper 2: General Studies I (250 marks) – It covers a wide range of subjects like Indian history, culture, geography, Indian society, and world history.
  • Paper 3: General Studies II (250 marks) – This paper examines the candidate’s understanding of governance, constitution, polity, social justice, and international relations.
  • Paper 4: General Studies III (250 marks) – It focuses on the economy, environment, biodiversity, technology, disaster management, and security-related issues.
  • Paper 5: General Studies IV (250 marks) – This paper evaluates the candidate’s ethical and moral dimensions, integrity, and aptitude for civil services.
  • Paper 6: Optional Subject Paper I (250 marks) – Candidates can choose one optional subject from a list of subjects provided by the UPSC. Paper 6 covers the first part of the chosen subject’s syllabus.
  • Paper 7: Optional Subject Paper II (250 marks) – It is the second part of the optional subject chosen by the candidate, providing a deeper exploration of the subject matter.
  • Paper 8: Language Paper I (300 marks) – Candidates need to choose one Indian language from the list provided by the UPSC and demonstrate their proficiency in it.
  • Paper 9: Language Paper II (300 marks) – Similar to Paper 8, this paper evaluates the candidate’s knowledge and understanding of the English language.

The English and Indian language exams are qualifying in nature, and their scores are not added together to determine the final ranking for the mains. The mains total is thus out of 1750 marks.

UPSC Board Interview/Personality Test

The UPSC interview, also known as the Personality Test, is the final and most crucial phase of the civil services examination in India. It is a face-to-face interaction between the candidates who have cleared the Mains Exam and the panel of experts appointed by the UPSC.

The interview aims to assess the candidate’s intellectual ability, critical thinking, communication skills, and overall personality traits. The panel evaluates the candidate’s knowledge, depth of understanding, clarity of thought, and ability to handle pressure and respond to diverse situations.

The UPSC interview is a platform for candidates to showcase their confidence, presence of mind, and ability to express their views effectively. It is an opportunity for aspirants to leave a lasting impression and secure their position among the country’s top administrators.

The interview consists of 175 marks. The final total of marks including the mains and the interview is 2025 marks (1750 + 175) which are used for finalising the national rank of the aspirants.
