Only one applicant from each of Israel, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Sweden has admitted this year in DU most recent round of admissions. Of course, this is a notable finding. The foreign students’ registration department disclosed these facts. Despite this unique happening this year, there has been a slight decline in the number of foreign students at DU. This is from 623 in the previous academic year to 614 in the current academic year.

Amarjiva Lochan, the Joint Dean of Foreign Students at Delhi University, disclosed that there are additional 30 students who have submitted their applications for PhD admission at DU. These applications are currently under scrutiny. If they will approve, the total number of international student admissions at DU will increase.

Definitely, this decline in the number of foreign students at DU has created an intriguing circumstance. It has signaled a significant shift in the composition of the student group. Amarjiva Lochan further added that even though there has been a slight decline in the number of foreign students at DU from abroad enrollments, the probable inclusion of 30 additional students seeking doctoral programmes could boost the number of international students in the near future.

This reduction in foreign student admissions is because of several factors. The one notable cause being the delay in the commencement of the academic session. Among the foreign students admitted, the highest number hails from Nepal, with 110 students. Following closely behind are students from Tibet, accounting for 100 admissions, and Bangladesh with 85 students. This diverse mix of international students underscores the global appeal of Delhi University. Which is even in the face of decline in the number of foreign students at DU for this academic year.

In 2022, the university welcomed 520 foreign students. Again, this shows a decrease from the 663 students had enrolled in the previous year, 2021. This decline in the number of foreign students at DU has produced an intriguing situation. However, It is indicating a substantial change in the demographics of the student body. The decrease stands at over 28 percent. Which highlights a significant reduction in the interest and intent of international students to study at this institution.

These statistics reveal a changing landscape for foreign student admissions at the university, with both enrollment and application numbers experiencing a decline in 2022. This shift may have influence of various factors, such as global circumstances, policies, or evolving preferences among international students.

According to Prof. Amarjiva Lochan, Joint Dean of Foreign Students at Delhi University, the university had over 7,000 applications for the present academic year. In comparison, the university received over 9,000 applicants the year before, which was a higher number. Moreover, this information highlights the fluidity of the university’s admission procedure. Hence, the varying numbers of aspirant students competing for admission. The University of Delhi received the most entries for the B.Com (Hons), English (Hons), BA Psychology, and BA Computer Science programmes, said the official.

How can the Foreign Students Enrol into Delhi University?

When Lochan had questioned regarding the decrease in the number of applications from foreign students. In response, he explained, “The decrease in application numbers can be attributed to a delayed academic session this year, which has occurred for various reasons. This delay has resulted in a reduced volume of applications being submitted.”

Foreign students can enrol in a variety of study programmes at the University of Delhi within two separate classifications:

  • Self-funding students, and,
  • Students are supported by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) which is an agency of the government that provides financial aid through a number of programmes.

Furthermore, foreign students applying for admission in any academic program, including certificate, diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate, MPhil, and PhD, do not need to give an entrance test. Basically, the admission procedure will be primarily based on a merit-based selection process.

The application-to-admission journey encompasses four overarching stages: application submission, assessment by the university, online admission procedures, and the necessary formalities following arrival in Delhi.

Prof. Amarjiva Lochan

“We have adhered to a time-tested approach. Admissions have been exclusively based on the candidates’ academic achievements, and a merit list has been established.”

This year, the university has extended the opportunity for all prospective students to indicate their preferred colleges of choice.
