How to Apply for Government Internships?

Internships in government agencies provide valuable opportunities for students and recent graduates to gain practical experience, develop skills, and contribute to public service. Government internships for students are a step by the government to include students in the making process and make them understand how a country’s government functions.

Government internships for students add a higher value to the resume, so sometimes it gets a bit challenging for students to grab one. And for applying successfully the students and aspiring candidates need to be well aware of them timely beforehand.

NITI Aayog Internship Scheme

As an initiative to launch more and more government internships for students, the Government of India has announced the NITI Aayog Internship Scheme for undergraduate/ or postgraduate and other scholars.

Interested candidates can fill in their application from their website and can avail the opportunity to work in the government sector even while they are enrolled in their universities or colleges and pursuing their degrees.

Government internship with Niti Aayog

In the NITI Aayog Internship Scheme, there are various departments and verticals from which students can choose as per their field of interest and passion, and gain valuable experience and real-world exposure to how a government department works and performs its functions.

Eligibility

There is also an eligibility criterion set up that needs to be fulfilled if any candidate wishes to 

To get enrolled in this internship scheme, firstly he must be from a recognized University or College the same is briefly explained here:

  • The candidate must have scored more than 85% in class 12th.
  • He/ She must have completed the 2nd year of his college or has appeared for the 4th semester of his bachelor’s degree.
  • All students who have completed their postgraduate program and are currently pursuing a PhD degree must have scored at least 70% on average in their undergraduate degree.
  • Students who are done with their graduation degree and have given the final examinations may also be considered for the internship subject to the condition that the timeline from the results being announced to them and the start of the internship must be less than 6 months.

Duration of Internship

Interns can choose the period at their convenience. It’s just that the minimum period for an internship is 6 weeks and if they do not complete the 6-week tenure they will not receive the certificate.

Perks and Stipend

Interns who work in central government departments and offices do not get any stipend.

MeitY Internship Scheme

The MeitY Internship Scheme (under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology) is one of the government internships for students which has been launched by the government of India specially designed, for the students to get first-hand experience under a qualified mentor.

Government internship with Meity

It aims at conducting the whole learning process through practical experience and classroom knowledge.

Eligibility

There is a certain eligibility criteria that candidates need to have to apply for this internship, they are:

  • The candidate applying must have a minimum of 60% marks in their last cleared degree and be currently either pursuing B.E/B.Tech, M.E/M./Tech/M.Sc.(Electronics)/MCA or Diploma in Electronics & Accreditation Council of India(DoEACC) ‘B’ LEVEL. 
  • The Candidates must have prior experience or any projects which he/she has done during his /her academic degree. If he is not experienced then must have updated knowledge of his field.
  • And they should also possess higher qualifications which should at least be equivalent to an associate degree level. 

Duration of Internship

The minimum period of service is 2 months and at maximum it can range up to 3 months, which will depend on their performance and if the Ministry feels that they will benefit from the intern’s experience.

Perks and Stipend

The government has fixed that it will pay a stipend of 10000 rupees to the interns and also a Certificate of competition.

The application submitted by the candidate must be sponsored by the educational institution/school he/she is currently attending.

Internship at the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT)

The SPIRIT internship is launched by the Government of India, especially for students to learn how the government of India functions. In these government internships for students, they will get a chance to know how the government works and how it helps the people. This is only for Indian students pursuing undergrad degrees or research work.

Internship with DPIIT

Domains of Internship

There are various fields in which the candidates can apply depending on their interests and passion:

  • Engineering 
  • Law
  • Management
  • Economics
  • Finance
  • Library Management
  • Computers

Eligibility

People who belong to other fields can also apply for DPIIT Internships, but they need to know how their knowledge and study area relate to DPIIT’s work.

Duration of Internship

The DPIIT internship program is available all year round, and the tenure of the internship can range from one to two to three months.

Perks and Stipend

The stipend fixed by the government of India for the DPIIT internship candidates is 10000 rupees per month.

Online applications will be duly considered and will be sent to the establishment division. After this step the bureau head will pick the intern(s) they need.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Internship

The RBI research internship program at the Central Bank gives exposure to interns order to get cutting-edge research in monetary systems, bank regulation, etc. This internship requires the interns to give their input on policy matters, research papers etc.

Also helps students to have an upper edge as compared to other candidates for future opportunities and higher studies.

Eligibility

There are certain eligibility criteria for students who need to apply for the RBI Internship program:

  • DSIM: Must have a  postgraduate degree in statistics, economics, or CS or MBA in Finance.
  • DEPR: Must have a finance-related postgraduate degree such as MBA in Finance or economics etc.
  • SRU: A undergraduate bachelor’s degree in engineering or computer science or a postgraduate degree related to finance like MBA in finance or economics.
  • ID: A finance-related post-graduation degree like an MBA in Finance banking or international relations. 

Duration of Internship

The internship period can range anywhere between 6 months to 2 years, depending on the organization’s needs and the candidate’s performance.

Perks and Stipend

The RBI has fixed a stipend amounting to 45000/- rupees per month for this internship.

DigiLocker Internship Program

Digi Locker is interested in hiring skilled young and motivated talents to serve as Negd interns for the Digilocker Project. The sole purpose of this internship is to make the young interns contribute and learn from their work. During the internship period, the interns are assigned tasks through which they can learn something and gain experience. The working hours for this internship are flexible but they have completed the assigned tasks in a time-bound manner.

Digilocker Government Internship for Students

There are various streams and options for pursuing this internship and candidates can choose as per their interest and passion. There are both development and operations-related roles.

  • Security Researcher/Tester

Digi Locker Internship Conditions

  • The minimum time for this internship is fixed at 6 months and it can be extended as per the department’s requirements and the skills and commitment of the candidate.
  • The internship will be voluntary, that is no pay will be provided to the candidates, and also no office space will be provided in any other internship scheme.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Internship

The Ministry of external affairs has launched a second version of its internship program for the year 2023-24. Its main aim and focus is to provide learning and valuable experience to interns. Also since it is an internship with the MEA so it will also give an upper edge to the resume of the candidates who pursue it. This was launched by the government on its 75 years of independence as a part of its Aazadi ka Mohutsav celebrations.

MEA Government Internships for college students

During the internship period, interns are assigned tasks as per their department chosen and their competencies, they may be asked to write reports, and conduct research.

Eligibility

To pursue the MEA internship one has to be an Indian citizen with a minimum educational qualification of a graduation degree from any university, or he/she can also be in the final year of his graduation. Also, a maximum age limit has been fixed for this one and that is 25 years.

Duration of Internship

This internship’s minimum and maximum period has been fixed at 1 month to 3 months.

Perks and Stipend

An honorarium of INR 10000 per month will be paid to each intern selected.

Initially, you will have to register yourself and then fill in all the requisite details and apply for the internship. 

Finance Ministry Internship Program

An Internship with the Ministry of Finance is one of the government internships for students that has been released in which candidates can pursue theirs in any department like Expenditure, Economic Affairs, Revenue, Financial services, etc.

The Finance Ministry of any country mostly takes major decisions like taxes, monetary matters, or preparing budgets for the country as a whole. Students pursuing post-graduation or research programs are eligible to apply for an internship with the Department of Expenditure.

Eligibility

There are certain eligibility criteria for students who need to apply for the Finance Ministry Internship program:

  • Only Indian students who have done or are in the process of doing a 5-year course in finance, management, or economics are eligible to apply for this internship.
  • Also, they must have an aggregate score of more than 50% during their 5-year course and also must have obtained a first-class during their undergrad and also more than 80% in their 12th grade. 
  • Also, they must be in the 4th or 5th year of their post-graduation course.

Duration of Internship

The internship period can range from a minimum of 2 months to a maximum of 6 months.

Perks and Stipend

An honorarium of INR 10000 has been fixed for all the candidates selected for this internship.
