In an attempt to promote Vedic Mathematics, which has appeared as the third-most famous value addition course among first-semester students, Delhi University is hosting a three-day session for varsity lecturers to communicate pedagogical difficulties and problems which are being confronted. It is also intended to discuss the course’s substance, according to executive DU officials.

Introduction

With the execution of four-year undergraduate courses, the university announced a range of value-added courses in the academic year 2022–2023.

Vedic Mathematics was the third most popular course last session, and there is a chance that it will surpass the others this time. Participants in the three-day workshop, which started on Tuesday, will come from all over the nation. Organized discussions are going on about the current curriculum and possible future curricula.

According to DU’s dean of academics, Prof. Niranjan Kumar

Importance of Vedic Mathematics

Importance of Vedic mathematics

There are several reasons to describe the significance of Vedic mathematics. Vedic mathematics can be used to simplify complex maths problems much more quickly than contemporary numerical methods.  Occasionally, using paper and pen is not necessary when trying to simplify mathematical simulations.  Vedic maths time-saving and increases interest in knowing more maths applications. The following is an overview of some advantages of Vedic mathematics sutras:

Measurements get simple and quick.

Less time is required to complete computations.

Fewer mental anguish impact on the students.

Outcomes from sutra-based techniques are simple to confirm using customary practices.

There is very little chance that students using such sutras will make mistakes.

Vedic maths has been neglected for a long. Not only decimal points but numerals have also existed in our country for a long time. Even the fraction system has been mentioned in the Rig Veda apart from several formulas that existed way before other theories came into practice. The current generation needs to know about these aspects as well.

Prof. Kumar

Vedic mathematics fosters conceptual understanding such as analyzation, synthesizing, & critical reasoning.  Neither a calculator nor a computer can accomplish this. According to the authorities, students’ prospective fundamental research will benefit from the coursework.

How Vedic Maths is Different?

How Vedic Maths is Different

Vedic Maths, a structure of arithmetic, was first initiated by Bharti Krishan Tirathji in 1911. He was the one who studied the Vedas and created an effective and straightforward maths system that was different from conventional maths.

He used 16 Sutras in this system for mathematical calculations

The concentration of Vedic maths is on mental computations, which aids in a children’s intellectual advancement.

Vedic mathematics is distinct from modern mathematics in that it is comprehensible & emphasizes the use of a specific technique for resolving significant problems rather than the use of different tactics for numerous questions.

It is adaptable to the organized framework that emphasizes & encourages students to perform mental calculations rather than performing calculations manually with a paper and a pen.

Instead of forcing students to use a structured method of problem-solving, it offers a chance to be innovative.

Speaking about modern mathematics, the relationships and continuity between the methodologies are non-existent. It employs unique formulas for different topics that aren’t found elsewhere.  The methods are laborious and time-consuming, and they don’t aid in a child’s development of maths and perceptive abilities.

Value-added courses

Value-added courses

With 76 colleges making a decision, financial literacy has become the most well-liked of the value-added courses. But on the other side, 54 colleges had chosen Vedic Mathematics.

As a component of the Undergraduate Coursework Framework-2022 (UGCF), Delhi University has scheduled to open a range of new value-added courses beginning with the academic year 2022–2023 onward. Emotional maturity, the aesthetic of happiness, Indian fantasy & Vedic mathematics are some topics.

Such new programs are intended to help students establish their critical thinking abilities.  A recent conference of the DU Academic Council adopted a resolution to implement 24 courses of a similar standard.  The executive council, the highest decision-making authority of the university, would now be proffered with the issue.

Each semester, a student has the option of taking one or more of these value-added courses.

The Undergrad Coursework Framework (UGCF) value-addition courses, according to some faculty members, will “dissuade analytical reasoning,” they claim. At the August 3 gathering, seven members of the academic committee voiced their disagreement.

The dissident representatives claim that such coursework only gives token attention to the issue of academic perceptions encouraged in students and diminishes the notion of India as a multicultural hub of epistemological and intercultural communication among people, language groups, and social customs.

Conclusion

Students can gain a competitive edge over mathematical ideas & foster involvement by combining contemporary maths with Vedic mathematics. This is the reason for its being the 3rd most famous value-added course among the UG students of Delhi University.

Vedic maths helps in critical thinking, analysis and synthesis for higher-order thinking. This can’t be achieved by a calculator or a computer.

Prof. Kumar

According to the authorities, students’ prospective research & development will benefit from this coursework.
