The application period for college admissions is now open, and students all over India are occupied with filling out applications and studying for entrance examinations. One of the most esteemed universities in the nation, Delhi University, is no exception. However, this year’s admissions procedure has alarmed both parents and education professionals as well as pupils with the most recent tweet of Ashneer Grover on Delhi University admission.

Where is the Diversity? The Question Over the Admission ProcessConclusion

On Wednesday, April 12, 2023, Ashneer Grover voiced his worries about Delhi University admissions after learning that 10 of the 500 students who were present at the event where he was speaking had board exam scores that were less than 95 per cent of the national average.

He raised the issue on his Twitter account after learning about it. He questioned the 500 children attendees and how many had Class 12 Board scores below a 95 per cent mark.

The opinion of Ashneer Grover on Delhi University admission has created a serious concern regarding the admission process. He thinks students are being turned away from courses they are interested in because the university’s entrance standards have been too stringent.

Where is the Diversity?

The Delhi University has effectively turned into an extension of school, where everyone is a student, he added as he was surprised to see that just 10 students raised their hands who had scored less than 95.

So went to a DU college yesterday. I asked an audience of 500 students how many of them had <95% in 12th Boards. 10 people raised their hands (2%). That can’t be healthy ! Essentially DU has become an extension of school – where everyone is a front bencher. Where is the diversity

— Ashneer Grover (@Ashneer_Grover) April 12, 2023

Many people responded to Grover’s tweet by pointing out that strong grades are the only requirement for admission to the majority of prestigious universities in the nation since there isn’t a better criterion. On the other hand, many teachers and students have come out in support of the views of Ashneer Grover on Delhi University admission.

The former Shark Tank judge expressed worry about the lack of diversity, and many others responded that this is because there aren’t any higher admissions standards and strong test scores are the only need for admission to the best universities in the nation.

The problem is the absence of better criteria to let them in. In pure pseudo-meritocracy, people tend to believe marks are the only possible number to track for a child

The Question Over the Admission Process

Grover recently stated in an interview that the board examinations are only one factor in a student’s overall academic success. They don’t represent a student’s potential or inventiveness or ability to solve problems. Students who may have succeeded in other areas but not in the board examinations are being treated unfairly by this.

Grover’s worries are not without merit. Delhi University’s admissions procedure has already come under fire for being overly rigorous and failing to consider a student’s overall performance. Despite excelling in other subjects, many students have been turned away from courses they are interested in because of their poor board exam results.

Grover thinks that the institution needs to take a more all-encompassing approach to admissions, one that considers a candidate’s overall performance, extracurricular activities, and other accomplishments. He contends that doing this will provide students with an equal opportunity to demonstrate their potential and skills and aid the institution in choosing the most qualified applicants for their courses.

Conclusion

Many students, parents, and education professionals are now concerned about Delhi University’s admissions procedure. The rigour of the admission requirements and the requirement for a more comprehensive strategy are reasonable issues raised by Ashneer Grover on Delhi University admission and must be taken into consideration.

It is crucial to make sure that every student has an equal opportunity to demonstrate their potential and skills and that the university chooses the best applicants for their courses, regardless of their performance on board exams. As Grover puts it, “Everyone is a frontbencher in their own way.”
