What Facilities are Available at Miranda House

Library:

Established on March 7, 1948, the Miranda House Library holds a significant historical legacy, with its first book accessed on July 22, 1948. The current building’s foundation stone was laid on March 7, 1973, by the then Prime Minister of India, Smt. Indira Gandhi. Guided by the motto “Right Document to the Right Reader at the Right Time,” the library is committed to preserving and granting access to a wealth of knowledge, inspiring and engaging users in intellectual and creative pursuits.

Functioning as a vital support system for the college’s teaching, research, and extension programs, the Miranda House Library boasts an extensive collection accessible to students, faculty, and staff. The well-equipped Reading Room subscribes to newspapers, weeklies, magazines, and journals. With a mission to acquire, organise, and provide reading materials for students and faculty, the library presently houses over 106,000 resource materials, meeting the needs of over 6,000 students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Membership is automatically granted upon admission to the college.

What Facilities are Available at Miranda House?

Undergoing careful renovation over the past decade, the library now radiates a bright and inviting ambience with ample natural light. It seamlessly blends modern technology with a rich collection, ensuring it fulfils its role as a Knowledge Resource Centre effectively. QR code technology facilitates students’ access to library holdings across the campus, while a digital footfall counter near the property counter aids in monitoring usage.

Spanning three levels and featuring six special sections (Textbook, General Books, Reference Tools, Reserves, Periodicals, and Braille Books), the library has embraced technological advancements, adopting the LIBSYS LSEase LMS package in 2001. Continuous technological enhancement is evident, with the recent installation of a Web-Centric OPAC. Accessible through six terminals and three touch Information Kiosks, the library also houses two Digital Resource Centers. The first, equipped with 30 computers, and an LCD projector, and suitable for orientation and training programs, serves all users. The second, the Amba Dalmia Digital Resource Centre for the Visually Challenged (ADDRC), caters specifically to visually impaired individuals.

The Hostel:

Residing in the Miranda House Hostel is an exceptional privilege, considering its historical significance and the notable alumni who once called it home during their formative years. Originally established as a residence before transforming into a distinguished college, Miranda House boasts a rich history dating back to 1948 when it was founded by the then Vice-Chancellor, Sir Maurice Gwyer. Lady Edwina Mountbatten laid the foundation stone on March 7 of the same year.

The architectural brilliance of Miranda House, designed by the renowned architect Walter George, is evident in its red brick building. The well-planned quadrangle, adorned with carefully maintained gardens and bottle palms, enhances the overall aesthetic appeal. The enchanting charm is further accentuated by long corridors, a dining hall featuring a high arched ceiling, and stone balconies. In recent years, extensive restoration and refurbishment efforts have been undertaken to preserve the heritage and restore the grandeur of the red brick facade and distinctive interiors.

Hostel fee of Miranda House

A recent addition to the hostel is a new block that seamlessly integrates with Walter George’s original construction, contributing to the overall beauty of the campus. Nestled within the college grounds, the residence opens onto Chhatra Marg.

Day-to-day operations are efficiently managed by the Hostel Warden and the Housekeeper, with oversight from the hostel administrative team. This team comprises the Principal, Vice-Principal, Bursar, Teacher Representatives on the Hostel Committee, Resident Tutor (if applicable), the Hostel Warden, and the Housekeeper.

Medical Unit:

Established in January 2014, a Medical Support Unit operates at Miranda House within the hostel premises, functioning in collaboration with the college. This unit complements the existing arrangement where all resident students are mandatory members of the World University Service (WUS) Health Centre at the University of Delhi. The WUS Health Centre, situated at V. P. Patel Chest Institute just across the road from Miranda House, offers fundamental medical services to students.

The in-house medical unit is well-equipped and enjoys professional support from the nearby Nu Life Hospital. A dedicated nurse is on duty six days a week, Monday through Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Additionally, a highly qualified doctor is available for consultations three days a week in the morning. This facility is ideal for routine health check-ups and addresses common medical concerns such as coughs, colds, indigestion, minor cuts, bruises, aches, pains, sports injuries, and mild fevers, among others. The centre maintains a supply of emergency medicines for allergies, pain, fever, asthma, and various other common ailments.

Counselling Centre:

The college places a significant emphasis on the counselling process, recognizing that nearly 70% of its students come from outside Delhi, with many being first-generation learners. The college community exhibits a wide range of diversity, encompassing varying socio-economic and educational backgrounds, ethnicities, cultures, religious affiliations, and student abilities. Within this diverse environment, challenges such as relocation, newfound independence, engagement in social activities, reliance on technology-mediated social networks, peer pressure, and intense academic competition can impact individuals.

Why does Miranda House College always remain at the Top of DU?

Counselling plays a crucial role in offering timely support to students dealing with emotional, behavioural, academic, social, or adjustment concerns. Despite the strong teacher-student bonds at Miranda House, mentoring alone may not suffice, making professional-quality mental health interventions necessary.
