The eagerly awaited DUSU election results are set to be announced on November 21, 2024. This development follows a stay on the results, lifted on November 13 by the Delhi High Court, allowing the University of Delhi to proceed with counting votes.

The DUSU elections, originally held on September 27, faced an unexpected result delay due to court intervention over concerns regarding public defacement from campaign materials. With the court’s clearance, DU has resumed preparations to finalise and announce the DUSU election results, ensuring a transparent and secure process.

The High Court’s involvement came after numerous reports emerged of public and university spaces being defaced by campaign materials. This type of damage, which included posters, banners, and graffiti scattered across campus and surrounding areas, raised significant concerns about environmental impact and compliance with university policies.

The stay required the university to commit to managing the defacement and maintaining a clean environment on campus before the DUSU election results could be released. After DU made notable progress on these fronts, the court permitted the lifting of the stay, setting a deadline for results to be announced by November 26.

DU has stated that the process will start at 8:30 a.m. at the DU Conference Centre on November 21, as the institution gets ready for the start of the counting. Election Commission representatives will be on hand during the counting procedure to guarantee honesty and openness.

DU has implemented several stringent security measures to safeguard the voting machines and ballot papers. Electronic Voting Machines, which were used to elect DUSU’s central panel—consisting of positions for president, vice president, secretary, and joint secretary—were securely stored in a strong room within DU’s examination department.

A police team monitors the area around the clock to prevent unauthorised access. For the election of college representatives, DU utilised traditional ballot papers, which have been stored securely within individual colleges and under police watch. This multi-layered security framework has been put in place to reassure students and maintain the election’s credibility.

An official from DU, speaking to the media expressed the university’s commitment to ensuring a clean and fair vote-counting process. “Most of the cleaning work has already been completed,” the official stated, referring to efforts to restore the campus environment after the defacement. “The EVMs and ballot papers will be opened in the presence of the Election Commission’s team to maintain transparency,” the official added, emphasizing DU’s efforts to meet the court’s stipulations.

With transparency as a top priority, the presence of the Election Commission’s team throughout the counting will likely reassure the university community that the process remains unbiased and is handled meticulously. The university has also coordinated with student representatives to keep them informed of developments, hoping to maintain open communication and allay any concerns from candidates or their supporters.

The DUSU election has lessons for student governance throughout India as candidates and students await the DUSU election results. The Delhi High Court’s focus has emphasised how crucial it is to run campaigns responsibly and how institutions must respect public areas. A reminder of the principles that give democratic processes legitimacy and efficacy is provided by DU’s dedication to security and openness in managing the vote-counting procedure.
The final DUSU election results, scheduled to be released on November 21, will mark the conclusion of a unique election season at DU, potentially paving the way for meaningful reforms in student governance. As preparations continue and the university gears up for the announcement, DU remains focused on ensuring a smooth, transparent, and secure process that reflects the principles of student democracy.
