What is the UGC NET Exam

What is the UGC NET exam?

The UGC exam, officially known as the University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test, is a qualifying examination in India for individuals who wish to pursue a career as an Assistant Professor or obtain a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian universities and colleges. The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in a Computer Based Test (CBT) format.

The UGC NET consists of two papers and is designed to assess the candidate’s knowledge, research aptitude, and teaching skills in their chosen subject. The performance in both Paper-I and Paper-II determines the eligibility for JRF and/or Assistant Professorship. Candidates who qualify for Assistant Professorship are not considered for JRF unless they also meet the criteria for it.

The exam is conducted twice a year, typically in June and December. For the current cycle, the UGC NET December 2023 is being conducted in 83 subjects at selected cities across the country. Candidates who clear the eligibility test for Assistant Professorship are governed by the rules and regulations of the concerned Universities/Colleges/State Governments for recruitment.
