The Public Works Department is set to initiate a comprehensive initiative encompassing greenery and cleanliness projects along the roads of Delhi University’s North Campus. In this endeavor, the services of a specialized company will be enlisted to ensure the upkeep of these roads. The company’s responsibilities will include rectifying any damage to plants and ground cover along the roadside, as well as the removal of horticulture waste from the designated green areas.
Among the specific areas targeted for enhancement, Chhatra Marg holds prominence as a key thoroughfare. Originating from the Vishwavidyalaya metro station, Chhatra Marg functions as the primary artery linking various crucial sections of the university and adjacent colleges. The maintenance efforts will not only address any existing issues but also proactively contribute to sustaining the greenery and cleanliness projects along this vital route.
By entrusting the maintenance work to a specialized company, the PWD aims to ensure a meticulous and effective approach to the preservation of the natural surroundings within the university campus. The holistic plan encompasses not only the rectification of damage but also the proactive removal of horticulture waste, emphasizing a commitment to fostering a clean and green environment for the benefit of all stakeholders.
The existing roadside is adorned with mature trees; however, the foliage and other ground-level vegetation beneath these trees require attention, as stated by the PWD. Moving on to another significant thoroughfare, GTB Marg traverses through GTB Nagar, a favored gathering spot for numerous students, courtesy of its plethora of restaurants and cafes. Hudson Lane, too, boasts a considerable number of eateries but grapples with congestion issues exacerbated by indiscriminate vehicle parking along its sides.
Exploring various routes within Delhi University, Sudhir Bose Marg, a path that meanders near the renowned St. Stephen’s College will also get renewed. This scenic route offers glimpses of academic brilliance and historical significance synonymous with the college.
Another noteworthy road is Shreya Mishra Marg, connecting to Chhatra Marg. This particular road not only winds its way through the Department of Zoology but also skirts the Vallabhai Patel Chest Institute. Of poignant significance, Shreya Mishra, after whom the road is named, was a dedicated student of Delhi University. Tragically, her life was cut short due to an unfortunate accident that occurred on this very road. Her memory lingers, etched into the fabric of the university’s landscape.
In addition to Thekedar Surjeet Singh Marg, the locality boasts several other significant roads, such as Jahanara Road, Polo Road, and Bhama Shah Road. These thoroughfares intricately weave through the area, contributing to its well-connected and accessible layout. Notably, these roads lead to the upscale Civil Lines neighborhood, renowned for housing the residences of prominent figures including Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, and various cabinet ministers.
Moreover, the well-laid network of roads, including Thekedar Surjeet Singh Marg, Jahanara Road, Polo Road, and Bhama Shah Road, enhances the overall connectivity of the region. This intricate web of thoroughfares not only facilitates smooth transportation within the area but also establishes vital links to adjacent neighborhoods. As a result, the accessibility and strategic positioning of these roads contribute to the overall appeal and functionality of the Civil Lines locality.
In 2022, following studies that highlighted the dust-related issues on treeless roads, the government issued a directive to the Public Works Department to pinpoint such areas and initiate greenery and cleanliness projects. The objective was to combat road dust, a significant contributor to pollution. The PWD was entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining green spaces along approximately 1,400 kilometers of roads, including central verges and roadsides.
Despite the noble intentions behind this initiative, maintaining the newly introduced greenery and cleanliness projects has posed a substantial challenge for the department. The endeavor to control dust and enhance environmental quality through the introduction of vegetation has encountered hurdles in terms of ongoing care and preservation.
