As per an official document, a Fund is issued to the Dhaka Hostel complex and about ninety institutions on the north and south campuses of DU to set up WiFi network. The same document states that the institution has set aside ₹67.71 crore for this effort.

The allocation of resources underscores the commitment of DU to set up WiFi network enhancing connectivity and technological infrastructure across its various educational institutions. DU to set up WiFi network which are not limited to the academic campuses alone, as it also extends to an upcoming girls’ hostel located in the northwest Delhi neighbourhood of Mukherjee Nagar.

The establishment of WiFi connectivity is underway across approximately 90 colleges within Delhi University, spanning both the north and south campuses, along with the Dhaka Hostel complex. The initiative’s funding comes from a loan corpus of ₹938.33 crore that the institution obtained from the Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA) in October of last year, according to the document. This loan is intended to support various developmental projects within the university.

Specifically, a portion of ₹261.33 crore from the allocated corpus has been approved by HEFA. This sanctioned amount is designated to DU to set up WiFi networks across the university’s campuses and hostel complex. Additionally, funds will be utilised to commence construction on a new building for the Faculty of Technology. This strategic allocation of resources aims to enhance technological infrastructure and academic facilities within the university, contributing to its overall developmental objectives.

The Ministry of Education and Canara Bank have partnered to form the Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA). The goal of this special collaboration is to provide funding for the construction of research facilities and instructional infrastructure at India’s top universities.

The prestigious Delhi University applied for a HEFA loan in 2022 with the goal of funding its expansion plans and requirements for infrastructure. The opening of a new college in Najafgarh and the construction of DU’s east Delhi campus in Surajmal Vihar are two of these plans’ most notable initiatives.

In addition, five other projects have been approved by the agency to obtain funds from the HEFA loan. The commencement of these initiatives is subject to funding sanction, indicating a dedication to improving research capacity and educational facilities within the university system.

What is HEFA?

HEFA is a collaborative effort between Canara Bank and the Ministry of Education. It serves as a vital financial support entity for the development of educational infrastructure and research facilities within India’s leading educational institutions. In 2022, the University of Delhi sought a HEFA loan to address its pressing infrastructural requirements and ambitious expansion endeavours.

This encompassed the establishment of a new DU campus in Surajmal Vihar, East Delhi, along with the inauguration of a fresh college in Najafgarh. The loan application reflected the university’s commitment to enhancing its facilities and accommodating its growing needs. Concurrently, Delhi University is poised to present a proposal for the extension of the validity period for two of its MPhil courses.

Specifically, these courses, focusing on Clinical Psychology and Psychiatric Social Work, are seeking an extension until the academic session of 2025-26. This strategic move underscores the university’s dedication to providing continued academic opportunities in specialised fields.
