The deteriorating condition of Delhi University colleges has come into the spotlight recently, exemplified by a significant incident where the Deshbandhu College boundary wall collapsed in the south campus due to heavy rainfall.

This unfortunate event has drawn attention to the inadequate maintenance of infrastructure in various colleges, particularly those located off-campus, which tend to receive less attention and resources.

A distressing incident at Hansraj College further highlighted the issue of poor infrastructure maintenance when a ceiling fan fell and injured a student. And now, the Deshbandhu college Boundary wall collapsed due to heavy rain. These recurring incidents shed light on the alarming state of college buildings within Delhi University. Neglect and lack of regular upkeep have led to hazardous situations, jeopardising the safety and well-being of students.

Moreover, social media reports have exposed additional instances of concern, such as plaster falling from walls and narrowly missing students. These incidents reveal not only the crumbling physical structures of DU colleges but also bring attention to the woeful drainage systems within college premises.

Flooded entrances and inadequate drainage infrastructure have resulted in students having to navigate their way across gates during heavy rains, risking their safety and well-being. Because the Deshbandhu boundary wall collapsed, the residents had to face loss of their vehicles.

Around 15 cars and some scooters & bikes were parked near the wall. When the Deshbandhu College boundary wall collapsed, all the vehicles were destroyed. The residents are also showing their resentment after the incidents.

The residents also said that they had complained several times to the college administration regarding the poor condition of the wall but the administration had not taken any serious action for the same. And hence, the Deshbandhu College boundary wall collapsed.

These frequent incidents collectively underscore the urgent need for comprehensive infrastructure improvement at Delhi University colleges. Adequate attention, resources, and investment must be directed towards ensuring the safety and conducive learning environments for students.

By addressing these issues promptly, the university can create an atmosphere where students can focus on their education without compromising their well-being. Recognizing the urgent requirement for funding, Delhi University has appealed to the Union education ministry, seeking permission to utilise unutilized funds.
The university is currently grappling with a severe fund crisis, particularly for development and renovation purposes. Despite these pressing needs, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has yet to grant approval for the utilisation of these funds. Students at Delhi University have long been advocating for special funds to address infrastructure development and maintenance.

The administration’s negligence becomes evident in the deplorable state of college washrooms, irregular water supply, inadequate cleanliness measures, and the malfunctioning or absence of essentials such as sanitary pad dispensers and incinerators.

These issues directly impact the health, hygiene, and well-being of students studying at Delhi University. By highlighting these concerns, it becomes evident that the university’s administration must address the pressing need for funding and prioritize the allocation of resources to tackle infrastructure shortcomings.

Adequate funding and attention are necessary to improve the conditions of college facilities, including washrooms and sanitary provisions, ensuring a safe and conducive environment for students to learn and thrive.

Public Reaction on Twitter

The heavy rainfall in the early morning led to significant water-logging and traffic congestion, causing inconvenience to numerous commuters. The public’s reaction on Twitter reflected their frustration and dissatisfaction with the situation.

Twitter users expressed their dismay at the severe water-logging, which resulted in difficulties navigating the roads and disrupted daily routines. Many commuters shared images and videos of flooded streets, submerged vehicles, and congested intersections, emphasizing the extent of the problem.

The inability to reach their destinations on time, coupled with prolonged traffic jams, elicited a sense of annoyance and exasperation among the public. Numerous tweets highlighted the urgency of addressing the city’s inadequate drainage system and the need for prompt action from the concerned authorities.

Users voiced their concerns about the recurring problem of water logging during heavy rainfall and questioned the preparedness of the civic bodies in dealing with such situations. The lack of effective infrastructure to handle monsoon rains was a prevalent topic of discussion, with citizens demanding long-term solutions to mitigate the impact of water logging and traffic bottlenecks.
